(Some of) The Best Easter Books for Kids

I've written and illustrated several children's books with Christmas themes. If you didn't know that, I invite you to check out The Gingerbrood and Audrey & The Nutcracker. I love the Christmas holidays, the traditions, and the lore. Most of all, I appreciate Christmas as the season in which we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, knowing the importance of His purpose here on earth.

But as a Christ-follower, I find Holy Week to be the most meaningful time of the year. If the Resurrection really happened (and I believe it did), everything is changed, and nothing in this broken world is beyond the scope of redemption. What a glorious event!

I haven't written a book about Easter—yet, but I have compiled a list of some of the best faith-based books for children on the subject. Of course, I use "the best" loosely as I'm not aware of every single book ever written. But here are some good ones!

🌱 Best Easter Books for Toddlers Ages 0–3 (Board Books & Simple Text)

  1. Jesus Rose for Me by Jared Kennedy

A simple, gospel-centered board book that introduces toddlers to the Easter story with colorful illustrations.

  2. Easter Is Coming! by Tama Fortner

A joyful, rhythmic board book building anticipation for Easter, focused on God's promises and Jesus' victory.

  3. Lift-the-Flap Easter Stories by Andrew J. DeYoung

A sturdy board book with flaps—perfect for curious toddler hands. This title introduces the events of Holy Week in simple language with interactive flaps that reveal parts of the story. It emphasizes Jesus’ love, sacrifice, and resurrection in a way that toddlers can begin to understand.

🌸 Best Easter Books for Pre-K to Kindergartners Ages 4–6 (Picture Books & Early Readers)

  1. God Gave Us Easter by Lisa Tawn Bergren

A heartfelt conversation between a polar bear parent and cub explaining the deeper meaning of Easter in a gentle, warm way.

  2. The Donkey Who Carried a King by R.C. Sproul

A moving allegory about the humility of Christ, told through the eyes of a little donkey—a great way to introduce Palm Sunday and the cross.

  3. The Parable of the Lily by Liz Curtis Higgs

A beautifully written story comparing the blooming of a lily to the gift of new life in Christ.

✝️ Best Easter Books for Middle-Graders Ages 7–10 (Deeper Themes & Bible Story Retellings)

  1. The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross by Carl Laferton

An incredible book that connects the whole Bible story—from Eden to Easter—explaining why Jesus died and rose again. Fantastic illustrations and theology for young minds.

  2. The Easter Storybook: 40 Bible Stories Showing Who Jesus Is by Laura Richie

A daily devotional-style book leading up to Easter, great for families who want to prepare hearts during Lent or Holy Week. While it’s best read in the weeks before Resurrection Sunday, it’s also a meaningful gift any time of year to help kids grow in their faith.
